Why can't I dimension hidden lines. I draw a part consisting of say two plates separated by a web. In the side view of the drawing the web is shown correctly as hidden lines but when I try to dimension the thickness of this web (the hidden lines) it won't pick it?

If you go into [Tools]->[Options]->[Systems Options]->[Display/Selection], there is a check box with the label "Allow selection in wireframe and HLV modes" in the "Selection of hidden edges" frame. Make sure this check box is checked.

HLV = Hidden Lines Visible

That should cure your problem.

Incidentally, the act of dimensioning to hidden lines is against ANSI standards. That is probably why the default setting will not allow such an act. Best practices and what not.

I agree with Shaggy18VW. It is against ASME/ANSI standards. I know a lot of companies do not follow them.
