Do exposed fireproofed steel beam need painting?
ground floor is parking garage and floors above are stores. it also has ceiling coverage on garage. We called for 2 layers of painting, but it would not be sticky for fireproof material.

Thanks

It depends on the system you are using for fireproofing.

Most systems need/rely on unpainted steel.

yes, contractor says they cant spray if painted or primed steel

There will be a ULC procedure that needs to be followed.

Some fireproofing sprays are compatible with some primers/paints. However not all. So our notes now indicate that the steel supplier and GC are to coordinate the finish requirements of the steel with the fireproofing supplier to ensure compatibility. We got burned a bit a while ago where all the steel showed up primed, and then the fireproofing guy indicated they would need to strap every beam in order to fireproof it. So that big extra on the project for the strapping caused us to change out typical notes to avoid the extra.

It doesn't however avoid the hassle, since many times the GC and steel supplier don't do the proper coordination, but it is always fun to see the look on their face when I point to that note and tell them "Your monkey, your circus."
