Dog Clutch - definition please 1

Hi,

I've just started the "Transmission" section of an Automotive Engineering course and I keep coming across references to dog clutches but I'm unable to find a definition of what they are or how they work.

Any help appreciated.

Dog clutches pre-empted synchronizers in manual gearboxes. Basically its a crude clutch that has no ability to slip, its either engaged or disengaged. This is accomplished via castellations on each rotating part, usually on a surface perpendicular to the rotating axis, that engage each other by moving one of the parts axially. Racing transmissions still use them exclusively. You can find examples by looking through Hewland's website or other race transmission websites.
