Double Suction for Molten Salt Application?

Hi,

I have a question to ask.

For molten salt application, i know low liquid level is extremely low compare to other application. So my question would be, other than low liquid level being low, are there other reasons why we usually do not select double suction for molten salt application?

For starters, you've got 2 seals instead of one with the typically used Vertical pump.

At the extreme temps you would see, there are typically problems sealing the case faces as well; that is if you are talking about an axial split double suction pump (splitcase pump). Vertical pumps can also separate or insulate thermal growth issues with the pump section from the suction/discharge flanges better than a splitcase by modifying the discharge head.

Now if you are talking about a vertical double suction, cantilevered, pump (such as a Lawrence or Hazelton) then I couldn't tell you why since they both have been installed for years in such applications. They are however, very expensive and require very crafty craftsmen to work on.

Vertical pumps and splitcases have a lot of overlap in terms of services they fit well. I think decision to go one way or another is often dependent upon the Engineer/Maintenance groups familiarity...."the devil you know is easier to deal with than the one you don't"...or something to that effect.
