Hi all

Standards NZ recently released a draft for comment of a long awaited replacement to the NZ timber standard, mostly consisting of adopting AS1720 with certain modifications in another appendix for NZ specific design.

The standard its replacing is 25 years old, so a lot has moved on in the timber world since it was published back in the day.

Most of the typical way AS standard works out things will no doubt be relatively familiar as the old NZS3603:1993 operated on a similar basis in terms of calculation of capacities with different 'k' factors. I hazard a guess it will be a fairly large change for NZ practices due to peoples previous investment in spreadsheets/programs to design to NZS3603. Adoption of an entirely new standard rather than a progression from the previous version is likely to result in some early adoption pains as people gain familiarity with all the new bits and pieces.

Anyway I was mainly starting the thread to see if anyone has some good reference material or design resources/published examples for designing to AS1720 to start to get familiar with any differences. Additionally I wanted to simply open a thread for discussion/thoughts on the draft or so people who have familiarity with both Aust and NZ design standards can share any pertinent knowledge about differences or things to watch out for. Obviously if its in the works I'd like to hit the ground running once it is cited in the NZBC and designing to it becomes mandatory.
