I have a model file (not an assembly) that contains a number of bodies that are all sorted into groups. NX 1872.

I'm creating the 2D views in Drafting now. I need to show several drawing views that contain varying combinations of groups. Is it possible to show and hide groups in an individual base/drawing view?

If not, is there a way to force new members of a group to automatically inherit a certain layer? I see that I can hide and show layers in a drawing view.

Not that I'm aware of, for either case. Your best bet is the organize your Model by Layers, as if they were Groups, and then use the 'Visible in View' Layer option.

Using Visible in View is a good way to go, but you can also use Hide Components in View, and after selecting the view select the subassembly (or just the components from it) from the model tree, or you can select them from the view.
You can also select the group using this method by selecting it in the part navigator.
Menu -> Edit -> View -> Hide Components in View
