Does anyone know a design method/guidelines for design of drilled shafts adjacent to an MSE Wall? Looking at a project where houses will be constructed adjacent to a 20' high MSE wall, maybe within about 10'-15' of wall. Looking at supporting houses on drilled shafts. Need to evaluate vertical and lateral loading effects on piers and wall.
Thanks

Look after Tschebotarioff's work. I do not not have the reference but I'm sure BigH will have it ! You induce a triangular stress distibution on the pile with a max of 0.4 x volumic weight of fill x height of fill. This gives you a maximum bending moment in the pile = 0.067 x vol weight of fill x height of fill x pile diameter x length of pile x length of pile.

Have not been able to find anything.....anyone else know the reference? BigH?
Thanks

Moe333 - I did not find anything in the Tchebotarioff 1951 edition - but my 1974 edition is in deep storage. i remember a paper written by H.Q. Golder and John Seychuk for one of the Pan-Am conferences - I would say one in the 1960s where they describe the lateral earth pressures on a soldier pile during the design and construction of one of the Toronto Sub-way cut and cover lines (Spadina, I think). I have the paper but it is in deep Toronto storage - but you should be able to find it. PInc.??

Moe - if you want the section from Tchebotarioff - he actually was an originator/pioneer in a lot of the lateral earth studies, give me your email and I will forward.

BigH, sent you an email today. Thanks for forwarding.

Will I recognize your email address? hfries at sncl dot com dot my or bohicafries at the rate of gmail
