I have a non-structural piece of cast iron about 1" thick that needs a hole drilled through it. Are there any special requirements for drilling through cast iron, and would a normal steel drill bit work?

Pylko,

It often helps to prevent cracking after drilling by chamfering the ID of the hole at the top and bottom with a 45-degree chamfering bit. This is especially helpful under loaded washers and nuts.
