Righto chaps,

I was lounging at home watching tele the other night when I heard a rather shocking 'fact'. I was watching 'oil riggers' about static oil rig in the states, following the trials and tribulations of drillers and roughnecks. Anyway, the programme stated that,,,get this,,,eight people a MONTH die on US drilling rigs. Can any of our US companions enlighten me? Can this be true? 96 people a year? Really?

I was sure I misheard,, maybe it should have been hurt / injured.

Any guesses?

hokie66 - add - are designers prepared to put out their necks on the whims of bureaucrats?

Yes, BigH, but unfortunately we do that all the time. I could just SHOUT!

Except the GOD's will, there is always safe way to do thinhgs, as long as there is time & $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Well, I might have to correct myself for some events, but the above covers 99.9% of the cases, I guess.

Can't really say I agree with that. First off, there will always be human error - people will always make mistakes. And certain jobs magnify the consequences of those mistakes greatly. Plus, some work is just inherently dangerous. It's not always that management is marching their employees into a meat grinder with no regard for life and limb, either. Sandhogs live by the grim "man a mile" adage. Crab fishermen die every season. These men willingly and knowingly take high risk, high reward jobs.

Of course I should point out that I'm talking about modern American construction, which is a completely different scenario from the situations BigH mentioned above in China, Laos, etc.

First of all, human errors are, if not the GOD's will, at your own hand. The errors could be eliminated by eliminating me & you - replaced with machines, robots that can handle the risk effectively. (Sure, just to argue, remember we can fight a war without even send in a single man or woman; we can cruise the world, the universe without leaving our beloved TV set....$$$$$ :) :) :).
