I am currently experimenting with several different software programs which uses CT Data to model the geometry of bone (Amira, mimics, analyze, etc). This geometry must be imported into ANSYS for modeling.

The problem is that these CT processing softwares do not export files that can be directly imported and used in ANSYS. They export triangulated surfaces (e.g., .dxf (AutoCAD), .stl), which are not practical to mesh.

These softwares can create an FE mesh, however, I cannot use this because I must remove sections of the bone geometry (and add implants), which is not possible if the object is already meshed.

Does anyone know if any CAD softwares have functions to smooth these surfaces and export them in .iges or .parasolid format? Or can anyone think of a better solution?
