from news "The Earth's rotation is the fastest it's ever been in 50 years, which means time is passing by quicker than it has in the past five decades."

Climate change? with the ice modifying the moment of inertia?

Rather than think climate change and the corona virus as science, think of it as the wrath of God. Feel any better?

Lots of possibilities, but it could just be magma floating around differently, possibly, since the magnetic poles are also thrashing around

Yup... could be several reasons...

And here was I thinking the time was flashing by due too much booze over the Christmas / new year break 😉

It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts. (Sherlock Holmes - A Scandal in Bohemia.)

What a great excuse if you happen to be late for an appointment.

About a decade ago, I stumbled on this issue. I spent some time on it, but was too busy to go into depth.

There is a very tight relationship between these "length-of-day" variations and certain components of "atmospheric angular momentum". It appears that a lot of the variation has to do with the momentum transfer between the atmosphere and the planet.

There is also a good relationship between these parameters and global temperature variations. But which way the direction of causality points is not at all clear. I may have to dig into this further.
