easiest way to use an SDIP IC

I've got a 20-pin SDIP (shrink DIP) packaged IC, and I'm racking my brain trying to figure out the easiest way to
use it in my breadboarding projects and also for permanent
versions.

The idea list so far:

1. Etch my own SDIP-to-DIP adapter board. Would requiring
buying an SDIP socket.
2. Buy an adapter board (like from epboard.com).
3. Solder extension leads to all the pins.

The part only costs $1, so I'd like to avoid paying $5-$10
for an adapter board. Any other ideas?

You don't want to purchase a socket, and you don't want to etch an adaptor board, so I'm not really sure what's left other than soldering individual pins...

A steady hand and 'dead bug' construction. Glue the chip upside down to an unetched PCB and wire directly to the pins. Use the PCB as a ground plane.

I forgot to mention that the chip is an LCD display, so dead
bug construction won't work

It can-- cut a hole into the board.
(the LCD is not too noise sensitive, doesn't need
continuous GND)
