How do I model a Knob so the cylindrical surface has a "diamond" knurl. I went to SW models and there is a model there with a Knurl made with a radial surface undercut, and its a really pain in the butt to do. Art L

Do you really want to model the knurl, or just have it appear in the model. You can apply a texture to the surface if you have SW 2004. This texture does not appear in the drawings.

Another option to model a knurl is to create a plane 45 deg to the head and do a sweep cut on that plane of a v-groove. pattern this sweep around the knob then do the same on the opposite angle. When modelling something like this, I recommend having a configuration with and without the knurl. Use the config with the knurl in the drawing, and the one without it in the assy.

To most accurately model a diamond knurl, I used a sweep cut that used a helix for the sweep path, then mirrored that cut, then arrayed them both. THE RESULTING KNURLED KNOB TOOK 3 HOURS TO REGENERATE ON MY P3!!! Follow Shaggy18VW's advice for the model (SW2004 texture). For the drawing(s), use a diamond hatch pattern @ appropriate areas.

Thanx Shaggadelic and JR. This is the response I thought I would get, but hope springs eternal and the powers to be love realistic models for "show and tell".Make one for "show and tell" and another one for "go" seems the order of the day.I have "SW04" but not installed yet. Will install and fool arround with textureing for the "big guys".

ArtL,

I posted this a while back and it seemed to be of some use. I also need to have photorealism often, and will export to dumb formats to save time after the real part has been finalized.

(Not sure if the link above posted correctly.) Have fun modelling.
