I am an EE. I only have about 2 years of experience under my belt, lost my job to layoffs and have been having trouble finding a new one in this economy. I thought about changing career paths to the oil and gas industry. I received an offer for a wireline operator in a different location that I'm still trying to decide on. Is it reasonable for someone with an engineering degree to start as an operator and quickly move in to an engineering position? Am I being lowballed starting out as an operator when I had worked as an engineer, the compensation is quite a bit less that what I was making, but in this economy it's hard to turn anything down. I was surprised to find that wireline engineers don't need more education than a high school diploma. They just need years of work experience, which makes sense, but it's just unusual to see that in most other industries.
Any kind of input is helpful, thanks.
