Hi,

What is the effect of the alloying elements on the thickness of the scale after the heat treatment?

Can we build several families of steels regarding their scale thickness after heat treatment?

Thanks in advance

stanislasdz,

I recommend you get Internet access to the ASM Handbooks online. There is a wealth of information for only ~ 200 USD/y.

The important elements for scale formation are silicon and copper (are you familiar with weathering steel?). Chromium reduces scaling.

Do you have some compositions in mind?

Can you simplify the question by having different categories, plain carbon steel (low, medium high carbon), low alloy steels (assuming low Ni,Mo and Cu), high silicon containing steels (like spring steels),medium alloy steels, chromium containing steels (<2% Cr, 2-5% Cr and higher grades of Cr).

This is just a guidance and might help in your search process.

Corypad and Arunmraoi thanks

Actually i would like to know after a heat treatment of a F22 steel part is it important to machining or not to achieve the ultrasonic inspections this case what is the effect of the scale ? but i would also know the effect of alloying elements on the thickness of steels

CoryPad : I will see the ASM handbooks !
