EH 36 High Tensile Marine Plate, P. No.

Gents,

AH36 and EH36 are typical high tensile marine plates grades.

1) AH36 or EH 36 is not listed in ASME section IX. In case a material is not listed in ASME and you want to develop a WPS based on ASME how would you do that? What would you put as P. No. and Group No.?
2) If you have an approved WPS for ASTM A106 Grade B (I think it’s P. No. 1, Group 1) and the repair involves a high tensile marine plate (here AH 36), Is it correct to accept a mild steel WPS (as in A106 Gr. B) and based on that do a repair involving AH36 material?

The use of ASME B&PV Code Section IX is not restricted to boiler and pressure vessel applications. I would assign an S No to the material and qualify the welding procedure using Section IX, see below.

To answer your second question, which goes back to your first question, I would perform a separate procedure qualification for this ABS material. I was involved with purchasing coal barges so I had familiarity with ABS Standards.

After doing a quick review of the ABS Standards Chapter 1, Section 3, "Higher-Strength Structural Steel Hull Construction Requirements", my reasons for qualifying a separate Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) are listed below ;

The ABS AH36 has a reported Carbon Equivalent of 0.40 max. It also is produced as fine grained micro-alloyed plate, with V and/or Nb additions. The UTS is 71-90 Ksi with a minimum yield of 51 Ksi.

Most important the AH36 has impact requirements for hull construction per ABS Standards. Thus, I would recommend a separate WPS qualified with impact testing for AH36.

No S No for EH/AH 36! As Metengr pointed out, these are str materials used for hull construction. These base metals will be unassigned metals and will need separate qualifications as per QW 424.1
