Elastic settlements, Fox equations 8

The time has come to improve my calcs sheets on elastic settlements.
Very useful to the purpose have been the computational
suggestions in Bowles, 1988 (foundations analysis and design, 4th edition).
But, alas, i dont'see any numerical solutions for If, the influence coefficient (foundation depth correction), proposed by Fox in 1948.
The book literally squirms with equations but If is given only in graphical form.
Anyone can help me out and send or address me to Fox equations?
No way I can get hold of the 1948 original article on ICSMFE. By the way, I had no chance to search latest editions of Bowles for any add-ons.

I find the institution be referred in the bibliography as ICOSOMEF, may be useful in searches.
 
I only saw this post today; sorry I'm 20+ months late!

I have a full set of the Second ICSMFE Proceedings (Rotterdam, 1948.) Give me the citation and I'll look it up. If it isn't too long I'll scan it and email it to you - assuming you are still interested...

I found two submissions by Fox in the first volume; one dealt with the square-root-of-time, the other dealt with elastic settlement of rectangular footings. There was no index for the whole conference proceedings -

If possible, I am also interested in Fox equations. The part of Fox equations that concerns settlements takes into consideration the depth of the footing through a coefficient (If) that depends on D/B ratio (D=depth B=dimension of the footing)so I would think that the article regarding elastic settlement of rectangular footings should be the one.

That's great, I'm still interested, those proceedings are definitely not easy to get hold of.
The citation is the following:
The mean elastic settlement of a uniformly loaded area at a depth below the ground surface,
in Volume 1,pp 129-132 of the 2nd ICSMFE.
By the way, can you have access to my registration e-mail in such circumstances or do I have to open up an "expendable" mail account and communicate it to you explicitly? Lately I'm having some trouble with spam, supposedly I exposed around my e-mail in some forum.
Also, I started a thread on 03 02 about foundations on top of landslide, in some way the order of threads got a bit messed up and it doesn't always appear on top. You spotted it? I'd be interested in your opinion on the issue.

I just today saw this post, sorry if its about 2 years too late.

I've gone through the same exercise that Mccoy did. I have the same edition of Bowles. I commited to spreadsheet a number of calculation procedures in that book, all dealing with soil stresses under footings, and settlements. I've coded that same section for settlements. I also got hold of a photocopy of the 1948 article by E.N.Fox. (I recently relocated, and I haven't located that phtocopy in a carton yet, so I can't share that just yet.) I coded that too, it's in the spreadsheet as well. (That's the calculated value of If in Bowles equations.) Anyone interested in a copy, I'm happy to share it. But I'm concerned about spam & don't want my e-mail out in public forum. If anyone is interested in a copy, please let me know how to contact you.

by the way, i did start to review my spreadsheets and the whole theory of elastic settlements in soils, and noticed some differences between the relation proposed by Bowles and the one proposed by Das (in the book on shallow foundations). What I grasped is that the latter gives a relation for settlements at surface where one of the factors (m or n) disappears; the equation yields higher settlements then in Bowles, whose relation (factors m and n both nonzero)is apparently similar to the one Das proposes for settlement at a specified depth.
You or anyone else have clear ideas about such issue?
Also, i'd like to start a thread on settlements below a flexible beam with point loads; I often use the elastic equation in cases where the model for settlements is not the right one (they are meant to be used only with uniformly applied loads). Such topic would also issue other sub-topics, such as modelling settlements on a winkler soil and suitable alternative solutions (reading: solutions apt to be coded in a spreadsheet!)

One other interesting aspect would be to introduce the correcting factors for thickness of elastic layer lesser then 5B, i saw something (also in Das) but only in tables.

unfortunately I never had a chance to visit Boca Raton, though I spent a few days in Florida, Fort Lauderdale, more then 10 years ago.
Used to travel pretty much in the past but presently family takes its toll.
I graduated in Italy but have always been interested in american culture and language; today I keep trained by watching DVDs in the original soundtrack.

Chichuck has done a good job of committing to spreadsheet the lenghty Fox equations. I understand why the textbooks just publish the tables and rigorously steer clear of the closed form solution.
Using Fox the settlement is reduced of a value not too high, in function of depth of embedment, but which can be significant also for shallow foundations.
 
I wouldn't mind a copy - but "please" check out some of my older posts (95% compaction) for my email address. I know that you all seem to love the Bowles book, etc., but do check out Poulos and Davis' Elastic Solutions for Soil and Rock Mechanics. It is a whole book of all the elastic solutions - embeded footings, surface footings, embankments on half space, horizontal loading of footings, etc.

Poulos' book must be a darn good one, but I still can't get hold of it. Last time I went to the college library it was out!
True indeed, Bowles is an excellent cookbook because of the plentitude of formulas and situations displayed, but, as Focht3 rightly points out, not all assumptions are explicitated and some points appear to be tricky.
And, worse then ever, of all equations, Fox correction is not presented in closed form!
The popularity of Bowles in some areas (here in Italy, for one) is probably due to the fact that it's one of the few complete geotech books translated, and it's pretty much keen on the practical aspects of the craft.
I'll mail you the spreadsheets ASAP!

Sorry - I've two copies, one here in India and one in storage in Toronto. You might be able to buy a used one at one of the used book sites. It should be everyone's library.
