Electric Boiler Question

Hi All,

We have a Electric Boiler with a PSV on it. The design code for the Boiler says EN 12953 / EN 13445 and EN 61936-1 / EN61439 - 1&2. Now I see EN 12953 is a code for the Boiler. Is this is similar to ASME Sec I?. This being an electric boiler should it be considered as un-fired pressure vessel ( similar to ASME Sec VIII Div 1)?. I have check the back pressure on a PSV installed on this boiler and want to know which code to check against.

"Unfired" perhaps, but not without energy input; ability to liberate steam in such volumes as needed to preclude boiler or system over-pressurization is still very much in play.

According to ASME Interpretation Number I-81-01:
An electric boiler where heat is applied to the boiler pressure vessel externally by electric heating elements, induction coils, or other electrical means is considered to be a fired steam boiler.
An electric boiler where the medium (water) is directly heated by the energy source (electrode type or electric
immersion element type) is considered to be an unfired steam boiler.

Note that Section I, Part PEB allows the use of Section VIII-1 to design an Electric Boiler, the PRV shall be "V" stamped PRV (not "UV") and Section VIII-1 PRV shall not be used in an Electric Boiler.

It would have been better to consolidate this query into one posting so that all contributors to comments can have full visibility (I may have missed the full story if I had not seen this post as it is not a forum I generally follow).

You started the post with the comment "We have a Electric Boiler with a PSV on it". First reaction should be, What are the details of this installed valve? manufacturer, model, nameplate/datasheet information? You should be able to find out to what code the valve was made to from this information that should be readily available. Surely there is some documentation for the entire boiler?

Where is this boiler installed by the way?
