What is the physical relationship between electric flux and electric intensity apart from the mathematical relationship?

Thanks.

Electric flux is conventionally described in terms of fictitious flow lines, originating from a positive charge distribution, and terminating on associated negative charge distributions. The density of the 'flux lines', or 'lines of force' per unit area, may be taken as a measure of the 'strength' of the electric field, or its intensity. In other words, the denser the flux lines due to a charge configuration, the more intense the electric field due to that configuration.
