Thanks dgallagher, that was useful. I was also put onto another manufacturer's site who make a similar product. It differed in that a single electrostatic field was used, with a saw tooth shape membrane between two electrodes.

Am I right in thinking that the dividing membrane is to prevent a current from flowing between the electrodes? Or is there more to it than this?

I thought the key benefit of electrostatic oil cleaning was to remove "soft contaminants" varnish, in particular.
I'm just a tech-pub junkie, but with the papers I read, that's the big advantage.
There's an arguments for cellulose in filters doing about the same thing.
