Has anyone here framed an elevator shaft with wood studs before? (It is gravity supported by the foundation) As long as there is no fire code issue does anyone see any issues with it?

All elevators that I have ever done have always needed rated walls since you are creating a continuous shaft thruout the building that can produce a "chimney effect" which can easily take a fire and spread it quickly thruout a multi- story building.

The architect claims that there is no fire code issue, and it is only servicing 2 floors.

If the building is timber framed, I don't see why you could not enclose the elevator with timber framing.

There are some exceptions to shaft enclosures in IBC for a 2 story.
