Dear,
I hope everyone is well, i am working on the design of elliptical flange for a manhole.
Does the rules of Asme div 1, appendix 2 apply? Or should we use another code? Does EN 13445-3 rules apply?

Why would you want an eliptical manhole cover, or is the cover round?

Dear it is a client requirement.
He needs the manhole to be an ellipse of some kind, 400x500mm. So the flange and manhole cover needs to be elliptical. Does appendix 2 apply?

I'm not sure about the Eurocodes, but in Canada, the requirements would apply. An eliptical manhole and supporting strucure is far more costly to manufacture and has the disadvantage that it can fall into the manhole 'shaft'.

Jay_, elliptical manways are commerically available. You could just buy one.

Faiing that, from your Apx 2 reference I guess you want a flange of some sort and flat cover. UG-34 has explicit rules for non-circular covers.

For the flange, ans assuming current U-2(g) rules permit, you could adapt Apx 2 rules a couple of ways. 1) Treat the thing as circular based on the major axis length.

2) Treat the thing as circular using an equivalent ID based on the area of the opening.

In any case I'd think you would need to insure the opening is adequaely reinforced, UG-37.

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

Thanks Sn... I didn'tknow they made them.

yeah, you see 'em in commercial air receivers for one...

I would challenge your client's request/requirement for ellip manhole. They are an old-school design originating from the early naval submarine era & no longer allowed by most

Elliptical manways are used all the time...easily purchased from a head supplier.
