This is a great site. I'm a newbie and have a question.
Does anyone know what version ug was at when they included the function of being able to unite, subtract etc... on the fly within a function?

Well it goes back to at least UG V16.0 (the oldest version that I have installed on my system) which was released in September 1999, so that means it's going on at LEAST 8 years now.

Thanks for the reply. Is it possible that it was implemented in version 10? Its just a disagreement at work we're trying to resolve.

I started on version 10 and I don't recall it not being available at any time in my UG usage history, so with 99% certainty, yes, it was included in version 10.

I started using NX (then known as UG) back on v11 and I'm certain the embedded Booleans were used back then.

Isn't there an enhancement coming along that will allow us to change the embedded Boolean to another type? For example if I create a Revolve and have it Subtract, when editing, I could change it to Create.

Yes, in NX 5 you will be able to edit the imbeded boolean, even if no boolean was selected the first time, to whatever you wish later on. Now I'm not sure this will be available for EVERY place where imbeded booleans are available, but it will cover the most common cases, such as extrude, revolve, etc.

Good news, John! Then I'll start using them.

Good point, and to take it a step further I'd also suggest maintaining your tool solid when you create your boolean. It makes editing a bit easier in most cases...

CAD should pay for itself, shouldn't it?

I think John's answer is correct: V16. I have been using UG since V9 and don't recall seeing it prior to V16.

My comment was that I was not able to TEST any code older than V16.0, but I'm positive that this behavior has been part of UG for much longer than that, perhaps as far back as UG Concept which was first released with V8.0, but I'm only speculating on that since I don't access to any code that old.

And as a comment with respect to the boolean or not to boolean issue, since starting in NX 5 you will be able to edit virutally all instances where a boolean was applied, whether imbedded or not, this will make your workflows much more efficient since you will have more flexibility later in the design process since you will be able to edit those booleans and in many cases there will be no need to create duplicate bodies that you hang on to, 'just in case'.
