I'm designing a segmental block retaining wall that will be located along the shore of a reservoir. I'm trying to get a comfort level with the embedment depth. The soils generally consist of dense, sandy gravel with cobbles and less than 5% passing no. 200. The slope (lake bottom) below the wall is very gentle.
the water level in the reservoir can potentially variate from near top of wall to -30 feet. The lake freezes every year. normally, i would say the water level will be near the bottom of exposed wall +/- a few feet when initial freezing occurs.
the frost susceptibility of the soils is low to very low, however, due to the free water source, i'm considering extending the wall down to local frost depth (40 inches). typically, wall designs around here are not provided with this much frost cover, but this is a special case.
Also, would anyone recommend some reference material for this type of wall design (marine or shoreline)? normally, is use ncma and/or fhwa methodology. i'm not as familiar with aashto, which i assume may provide some useful info. any direction/help is very appreciated!
