Hello. I am working on a design review of the of a 50kw three phase gas fired emergency generator. I have the following configuration.

50kw,277/480V 3phase(Generator)->200A Automatic transfer switch->100A 277/480V Emergency Panel->30Kva Stepdown Xfmer-> 100A 120/208V 2nd Emergency Panel.

1200A MDP with 400A 3pole breaker->200A Automatic transfer switch.

I read in an article on the web that since the load on the emergency panels are 200A combined high and low voltage. That you can get maximum output by putting a 400A on the MDP panel. I was wondering does this make sense to do it this way or is it correct to have breaker to be same as Automatic transer switch rating or just the load of the initial panel?

The breaker feeding the ATS should not have a higher rating than the ATS.
