Hello everybody,

I have to supply a vessel with a good level of tightness, raison why I have to calculate all the connections according to EN1591-1, but some of them are used with o-rings or c-rings.
I think the EN1591 is not applicable for this type of joints, is it right or it exist maybe an equivalent?

If not, what should I do to provide a good analysis of the o-rings and c-rings flanges tightness?

Thank You,

It depends.

If you have a C-ring, you require some (albeit low) compression for the gasket seating condition. Then you can use ASME VIII Div 1, appendix 2. I’ve used this method recently for a flanged like connection too, using a C-ring, for a design under AMSE VIII-1.

An O-ring does not require prestress and is covered by appendix Y in ASME VIII-1.

If you read the scope section (chapter 1) of EN 1591-1, your answer lies in the second paragraph (4th sentence). PS: I’m looking at the 2013 edt.
