Hi,

We have an old piece of equipment which has load bearing pins originally manufactured from EN19 condition T. The pins were welded into place. Our fabricators aren't prepared to guarantee their welding of the EN19 pins as they say it is quite tricky, and due to the fact that this need to be done on-site in less than perfect conditions. I was thinking of manufacturing replacement pins from S700MC or an equivalent high yield strength steel which is readily weldable. As this material is supplied in plate form and not bar, would there be any detrimental effects from manufacturing a turned pin from plate rather than stock bar. Any other comments on the material choice?

Regards,
Christopher

If it were me I would require load-bearing pins supplied from either rolled or forged bar versus plate. The directionality of a rolled plate must be known with certainty prior to laying out where to remove material to machine pins.

I would recommend you look at low alloy steel, similar to a 4130 steel, in bar form.

I concur with metengr, trying to make round pins out of S700MC plate is not a good idea. If you cannot use an alloy steel that is quenched and tempered to the desired strength, then you might look at a microalloy steel such as SB600 from Ovako. Slightly lower strength than EN19T:

Ovako SB600 microalloy bar

Thanks to both of you for the advice. I'll certainly look at the materials you have suggested.

Kind regards,
and thanks for the help.
C.
