Enclosure door width

Does anyone know if electrical equipment doors can ever be over 36" wide? I thought I had read in UL, NEC, ANSI or NEMA some time ago that they could not, but I can't find it any longer. I have recently seen some equipment with 44" wide doors which I have always understood to be unacceptable. Any thoughts? I know they are flimsy and can barely hold their own weight, but I'm looking for specific chapter and verse from a recognized authority as to why I can reject them.

Dear jraef,
I have no idea about UL or NEMA but as per CE there is no restriction on the width of electrical cabinet door. Their only requirement is that the main power should be isolated as soon as somebody opens the door. We are using electrical door safety switches and tripping the main breaker by this using a shunt trip coil.

I couldnt find anything on door width requirements. You may want to contact HOFFMAN , SAGINAW CONTROLS
ENGINEERING (SCE) or PARK METAL.
The other option to prevent this from happening again is to create a set of electrical standards that any new machinery or electrical equipment must meet.

As I remember 36" with reference to Panel door, This is minimum space infront of any cubicle as recommended by IEEE(I guess). If the door width is more than this, than space should be more than door width.

36" is minimum space in front of any cubicle as REQUIRED (not recommended) by NEC (not IEEE).

Actually, NEC has various depth requirements based on voltage and other conditions, see NEC Article 110 for details on requirements for width & space & height clearances in front of and above electrical equipment.

So far as I know, there's no legally-mandated maximum size limit to door widths.
