I'm looking to tie an existing sheetpile bulkhead to a new sheetpile bulk head. The client doesn't have the funds to replace the entire bulkhead so we are only replacing a portion.

The plan to to cut the existing sheeting vertical to the mudline, then cut horizontally below the mudline and remove the replaced section. we wuld drive new sheeting in front of the sheeting left in place. The new sheetpile would be anchored. This part if the design we have in hand. Its the end detail or connection to existing we need to work out.

I need to develop some sort of detail to "connect" the new sheetpile to the old. The issue is that the existing sheet is deteriorated. We considered some sort of receiver that would be fastened to the existing but we aren't sure how effective it would be. The best idea we have so far it to drive and Hpile in front of the existing sheeting and weld or bolt a receiver to that for the new sheeting.

Is there some sort of material to put behind the Hpile to seal of water from coming behind the pile? W could drive the H pile right up against the existing but it want be a complete seal. Is there some other detail I should considere to make this end connection?

If you come up with a solution which does not allow backfill to escape through the bulkhead, let me know. I have detailed a piece of sheet pile driven as close as possible to the existing sheet pile, with grout bags filling the gap. I have also detailed a flat plate welded to both new and existing sheet pile, again with grout bags.

However, I have had limited success with this. Backfill eventually escapes through the gap, leaving a sink hole at the ground surface.

I might think to utilize the front flange and build slot on the H-pile to receive/seal the new sheetpile, which should overlap the existing sheetpile.
