End to End testing using GPS

Hi every one,
I am doing a study into the merit of End to End testing of O/H line distance protection schemes using a GPS device to synchronise two test units at two substations, for a utility. I had done these tests three years ago and I know there are some good points in doing them, but I would like to know your opinion if you have had any previous experience with this type of test. Thanks

Suggestion: The GPS use for protective device and protective scheme synchronization is ongoing. It will probably eliminate PTs used for those purposes. It will also be more accurate. IEEE Monitor, New York City, December 2003 Issue (Vol. 51 No. 4) advertized a presentation "Phase Matching Systems Using GPS" by Paul Stergiou and David Kalokitis. Also, GPS World included "GPS and Power Grid Intermesh" on November 1, 2003 by Paul Stergiou and David Kalokitis.

No experience here. But I know Schweitzer is doing a lot of work on this for measurement of power angles on a real-time basis. Maybe you can find someone at SEL who can help.

I’m speaking from the rumor mill, but it seems the relay-test-equipment bigboys, regional electric-reliability councils and organizations like FERC mention it periodically.
