Hi Guys
Need some help, we are involved into engines in China and normally we take the engines to Japan to have it Dyno, this has proven to be time consuming and now we are looking to get our own Dyno. I have been looking at what is available in North America, while not an expert, decided to ask your help and advice on what Dyno made in the USA is a reliable to purchase. Our budget is between $10.000-$15.000 maybe some more, and has to be able to measure between 80 to 350 hp at 6,500 rpm. I know, some run on water other use oil and the Eddy type would be a very expensive. I done some goggling and found this companies making Engine Dyno’s, please see the below link, I would appreciate all your input.

Thanks

If it doesn't need to say "engine dynamometer" on the side, I would consider rigging up something like a DynaPack... direct connection (typically through the hub), but it should have all you need.

Oh, well thanks for your advice, looked at the company in NZ and they only make chassis Dyno’s, I need an engine Dyno.

Importing used machineries in to China under customs law is prohibited, imagine the headaches buying used stuff and doesn’t work or and sourcing parts.

310346,

I think if you narrow down your requirements a little more, you will probably find one that suits your needs best.

Are you looking to do emissions testing? engine calibrations? parts development? Something else?

Some tasks might require you to spend time with the engine loaded at a certain RPM, others might be better done with a sweep test measuring power. Some might require additional sensors and data acquisition.

Make a spreadsheet of features needed, and then compare the different models. That has worked for me in the past when buying dynos.

I went with a Dynojet, but that is a chassis dyno. I do know Superflow is good, and you might want to give a look at Mustang as well. But with a $10,000-$15,000 budget, you may be limited in what you can get.

Another item to consider in dyno purchasing is your enclosure and ventilation. You need to make sure no exhaust leaks into the rest of your building, and that you have adequate fresh air inside the dyno cell. In addition to any noise requirements you have. That may cost $10,000-$15,000 by itself.

We have a small dyno cell at our shop which we use for R&D. We built the cell from scratch and we have a basic superflow 902 dyno.

That's my qualification for the following statement:

The cell, sound proofing, ventilation / exhaust, pumps and other mechatronics can easily cost most of your budget. If you really scrounge and use lots of used parts, etc, perhaps 1/2 to 1/3 of the cost.

To get a dyno for the remainder, you will have to build it yourself or adapt it from some other use. The most basic setups from dynomite / land and sea might just barely squeeze into your budget though:

I would give our cell a 6/10 compared to real big bucks industry stuff, and we probably have 70-80k into it total :-/

Having looked seriously into acquiring a Dyno and realizing that for $10/15.000 I would not get much except a very basic water brake. Needed something that can hold the load for long time, and the only ones are the Eddy Current Dyno’s. In view of that, contacted a North American company (Super Flow) and for a 400hp was quoted over 100k plus mark.! No sure how it happened, buy received an email from a Chinese guy representing the company in China. As it turns out, the a SF-902 series Eddy Current sold by Super Flow are in fact made in China , It dint take me long to find out the Chinese manufactures’, visited the factory , gave me a production tour (and for a moment I thought I was in Germany) the EC-350 S (294 kW up to 8,000) is branded in the US as the SF-902 series. I did find out too, Super Flow only assembles the Dyno’s in the states but all gets done in several Chinese factories. Anyhow, purchased a EC-350 S water cooled Eddy Current with all the software , console, all the sensor ,pipers , water tower , PC and screen, engine docking and two weeks training and other bits and pieces for $39.000, and 2 years warranties, and they throw in a cast iron slot machined 500kg base. As an aside, the Dyno’s made in China are made under German license from ZOLLNER and Called in China NANFEG-ZOLLNER.
Thank you guys, for all your advice
