Where do you think the Mechanical Engineering "hot beds" of activity are?

I think I know the standard places like Greenville, SC or Houston, TX but where else?

I'm not currently considering re-locating, but maybe, just maybe if there is a cool place where a lot of ME opportunities exist, I can at least start to make a plan...

Silicon Valley always has need for exceptionally talented mechanical designers who can do all the cool swoopy surface CAD modelling.

I'm in WI and getting plenty of calls.

Alberta and the oilsands are still going at a rediculous rate. Away from the Texas heat if someone is so inclined.

Big stuff in Dubai, if I ws young and single, heck just single, I would be there.

I get weekly headhunter calls to work in Oil & Gas in Denver, Oklahoma City, Dallas, and of cours Houston.

Alabama, if you can stand the weather.

Where do you find out about Dubai opportunities? Although I'm a mfg. engineer, not a licensed ME. Does a MBA get you in the door?

Just curious, what's in Greenville, SC that makes it a hot bed?

Huge resources boom in Australia - perth, queensland and south australia.

Has a wonderful climate and western values.

Not so sure on the aussies interpretation of footy though.

Agree with rtmote and eliebl. Alberta Oilsands region is incredibly busy. So much so, that they are paying I&C techs 6 figures base salary 1 week on 1 week off.

Last year I was getting alot of calls for aerospace work in the Carolinas.

I am currently in S.E. Michigan in the Auto industry but still get plenty of calls (surprisingly) for work around here. Granted, not work I enjoy doing but it pays well. I am an ME but most of my work is in plastic design and electronic packaging. Need to get back to gears and machine components but can't afford it ;)

Occasionally there are calls from the east coast as well. I never get any from the western states (anything west of Indiana that is)

Depending on your experience and skills there are definately well paying jobs in central Australia.

cksh,

I was also in SE michigan doing work for the autpmotive industry and made the move to NC this winter. I highly recommend it, but take it from me, sell your house in Michigan BEFORE you buy one down here.

P.S. Interested in a nice house in Milford?

MACMET at one time (don't know if true anymore) Greenville-Spartanburg bragged about having "more engineers per capita than Silicon Valley" due to all of the A&E firms there. Fluor, Lockwood-Greene, others that came and went. There was lots of textile-related work there (no more) and the BMW assembly plant + suppliers is there. Michelin North American HQ + plants there, Lockheed Aeromod, GE-Turbines too. Lots of manufacturing activity with various companies.

To get into Dubai work:
1) you can try UK Daily Telegraph, online or Thusday, in print. The best place to find ME work. Don't worry if you're not in the UK, have alook, there are agents looking for CV/resumes.

2) Also try
3) is good too

I have succeeded throughall three channels

Any large city will have work for qualified MEs. Some locations have a particular bias: chem industry on Chicago, tall buidlings mechanicals in NYC, automotive in DTW [at your own risk], aviation in a number of pockets around the country, computers in CA, etc.

The trick is parlaying your experience and interests into diverse areas, which may be similar enough to justify a move.

Dubai is very expensive to live these days.

A friend was looking to work in Dubai but when they found out they would be paying a crazy amount for rent they decided that it wasnt worth it.

They ended up going to one of the other emirate cities.

If I was single I would definitely try living overseas for a while. Not as adventurous nawadays though.

Engineers are flocking out of Michigan. Maybe thats why I still have a job! We are sending work to China trying to keep up. Of course then we redo it when it comes back because they have limited experience. Then I have more work to do so more gets sent to China. Nice little cirle ;) But my company doesn't think too far ahead. At least I have a job for the time being.

Zogzog, I hear you about the house. Not sure I will ever get out of mine.

Been wanting to move to the Carolinas for a couple of years but can't get the wife to leave Michigan. I have family in Charlotte.
