Hello,

I recently graduated with my BS in ME and I am on the hunt for a job. I am really interested in the automotive and aerospace industry. I am very interested in an automobile's suspension and geometry. Where could I go about learning more about suspension and or finding a job in the area? I understand that it's not usually an entry level specialty, but you have to start somewhere, right?

Thanks,

It is as good a place as any to start, in fact we have 2 coops/new grads working in ride and handling now.

So either join an OEM, or a supplier.

Areas where a supplier's expertise is easy to parlay into a good job at an OEM would be tires, shocks, and steering racks.

Cheers

GregLocock,

Thank you for the fast reply! I'll look into OEM and suppliers. Where do you work, if you don't mind?

2nd what Greg said, mainly because engineers from those types of suppliers often play an active role in developing the vehicle with the OEM's. Spring, bar, and bushing suppliers generally manufacture their parts to the OE spec, and that's it.

I started fresh out of school as a design/release engineer for a shock supplier. Moved to the ride development group where I tuned cars with the OEM engineers, then was hired by the OEM I supported as a vehicle dynamics engineer. If you are into suspensions, vehicle dynamics is the place to be.

Jahan, thanks. I've looked into it but not as much as I'd like to. I'm going to take a big leap this weekend.

Thanks again guys for the help and advice.

Ericson
