Epicyclic Gearbox

I am interested in epicyclic gearboxes to solve a design problem I have. Does anyone know if this type of gearbox design can achieve a 40:1 speed reduction. I am also constrained by size so this gearbox needs to be compact. Examples I have seen have low ratios and I fear the reduction I am looking for will require large gears that will not fit the space available to me.

Yes they can. Staubli makes their own epicyclic gearboxes and uses them on their robots, is a derivative of their textile technology I believe. Their ratios are in that range. There is a Japanese manufacturer that makes something very similar for the US industrial market, but for the life of me I cannot recall their name.

Compact? That all depends on the load carrying capacity required by the application.

Using conventional off the shelf planetary gear reducers, you would have to do a 40:1 reduction in two stages. But, this is not a problem.

Have you considered Harmonic Drives?

As an alternative, have you looked at cycloidal reducers? Sumitomo makes cycloidal reducers that are compact and can have really high ratios.
