Got asked to design a stand for equipment. Pretty strait forward. Only issue is that people will get under it to do welding, etc on the equipment.
Are there other requirements other than normal load factors. Does it need a FS of 3 or higher?
Thanks

If you make an equipment stand that doesn't have much deflection in order to have accurate assembly, the issue of a factor of safety may be moot.

People get under buildings, bridges, elevated tanks, etc., so that alone is not really an issue.

Thanks. I did think about it and do a bit of reading. Its not a suspended load. I will just use normal load cobinations and see where I am at.

When you say that people will be under the platform for welding etc... That makes me think that the positioning of the equipment might change over the years.

If it doesn't have much design/material cost, then I would assume that the equipment could be positioned in any location on top of the platform.

If altering the equipment position does have a large cost associated with it; then I would ask the client.... "do you want this designed for 1 position only, or do you want the flexibility to move stuff around over the years?"
