I have a drawing which specifies the following items;-
1) BS 970 080 M40 Pin
2) BS 1574 Split pin

Our client is in the USA and wants the US equivalents to these. I have searched the internet for a while and have been pretty unsuccesful so far.

Any ideas??

BS 970 is a British Specification that is really 6 different standards (Part 1 through Part 6). It covers a wide range of alloys and product forms. The specific grade 080M40 is equivalent to SAE 1040 in chemical composition. There may be additional requirements for mechanical properties, etc. in the specific BS 970 standard (Part 1, Part 2, etc.)

BS 1574, SPECIFICATION FOR SPLIT PINS (INCH SERIES), is a product standard for split pins, and therefore, not a steel grade. It probably lists a range for the chemical composition requirements, of which many different steel grades would be acceptable, but I don't know for sure.

One recommendation would be to order the standards from a company like Global Engineering Documents. I have provided a link to their website, specifically listing the BS 970 products that are available. Just type "BS 1574" in the search box to find out ordering details for it as well.

Another suggestion would be to discuss the current materials and specifications with the current vendors. I have found that it is possible to obtain the requisite amount of information regarding foreign specs and standards without always having to purchase them. Good luck.

Thanks TVP,

I have specified SAE 1040 for the pin with the min. req'd mechanical properties of 080M40, hopefuly this should do the trick. Still working on the split pin.
Cheers.

BS1574 is a UK specification for split pins (inch series).

The American equivalent would be the American National Standard Cotter Pin (ANSI B18.8.1 -1972 , R1977)

Cheers GB (UK)

Cheers gjb1,

I performed a search for ANSI B18.8.1 on the internet and found a load more useful ANSI specs.

I'm sorted now - thanks again.
