Hi

Can anyone tell me the modern equivalent of EN38 please.

In BS790 part 3 table 19 for say 216M36, in the size column it quotes letters P, Q and R. Do these relate to the tensile strength as suggested in table 29 or something totally different that I've missed.

Thanks in advance

Hi azzt -

There is no modern near equivalent to EN38 (taken from PD6474:1976 -Two way index of the designation system used in BS970:1955 and later revisions).

You will need therefore to determine what mechanical properties you require, then choose a suitable steel from BS970 Pt3 1991. You might need to agree this change with your client.

The designators P, Q, R do indeed relate to tensile strength given in Table 29.

Thanks for the info, sorry to be a pain but what is PD6474:1976, where would one get a copy of it?

Cheers

azzt - if you can post some more details about what you are trying to make and where you are located then I suspect you will get a number of suggestions of potential alloys which could be used.
