In V4 you could very easily intersect a solid and plane to get a section. In V5 i'm not allowed to do this. I get an error - "feature involved in update cycle". I'm using a simple block with a hole in it, there is nothing hard about this part. What does it want? The process i'm using is as follows: 1. offset plane, 2. pic part, 3. pic intersection icon, 4. pic plane. Then I'm blessed with the update error. Is there something i'm missing? What is the exact procedure since what I'm doing is apparently wrong?? Can anybody help?

Hi,

Strange. If you choose Wireframe workbench, offset plane, select intersection icon, choose first element (lets say the plane), second element, OK, everything should be OK.

1) Make sure that your solid is updated before the operation
2) Make sure that you have activated the body (in the tree - "define in work object") that you want to intersect. (if you have multiple bodies)

Now then - are you working with hybrid mode, or standard?

Update errors are generally caused when you are trying to do something (in the tree) at a point other than where the operation could logically exist. To put it another way, it's like going back in time to celebrate your birthday, and landing in a year in which you weren't even born.

Working in hybrid mode can significantly complicate this process. Without more details at this point, it's practically impossible to give a definitive answer, but check out the above, and then come back.

By the way, what you have is truly an "error." There is nothing difficult, or unusual about the operation that you are trying to perform. It's one of the "basics," actually. (in that it's one of the most commonly performed operations)

new2v5,

Couple of suggestions. First, try isolating the plane before doing the intersection. This can be done by clicking on the [blue]Create Datum[/blue] icon before creating the plane offset or by isolating the plane afterwards (I think you can do this by RMB clicking over the plane and selecting isolate from the contextual menu). Suggestion two is to create the intersection by selecting the partbody from the Specification Tree, not the actual geometry itself.
