Absolutly. The lowest 'variable' that AWS & ASME recognize is the SFA designation, e.g. SFA-5.1 E7018.

"Wowie-zowie" E7018 and "Blammo" E7018 are both the same for Code purposes.

Essential variable for welder qualification or procedure qualification?

For welder qualification, it is an essential variable if the electrode does not have an F number.

For procedure qualification, it is only an supplementary (impact testing required) essential variable if the electrode has a general (or -G) classification, such as E9018-G.

These do not usually apply for run-of-the mill welding though. If you only run electrodes with standard AWS classifications, it is not an essential variable.
