Dear all,

I just want to know about the price of the spool drawing, When we do the bidding, How to calculate the spool drawing price?

And I would like to know How much is the general price of spool drawing? Do they charge by page or by diameter of pipie? Please give me advice.

Thank you for your kindly advice/answers.

An hour figure of 8 - 10 hours per iso is what I use (this is a number for "real isos" not the iso gen type whick are so chopped up), + checking 20-25%(2 - 2.5 hours) + corrections 6-8%(.5 hours). Big Inch's number of 15 hours is real close to what I use

Here is some data I collected. See if it helps you.

PIPING ESTIMATING DATA

The following data is a summary of the averages of actual data from 4 representative projects conducted in the late 1990's. The smallest was $9,000,000 and the largest was $60,000,000.

Category Data
Average Total Project Hours = 126,055
Average Total Piping Hours = 33,810
Average Percent Total Piping Hours vs. Total Project Hours = 26.82%

Average Project Line Number Count = 391
Average Project Isometric Count = 1,403

Average Total Piping Design Hours = 26,190
Average Total Piping Material Engineering Hours = 1,854
Average Total Piping Material Control Hours = 800
Average Total Piping Stress Engineering Hours = 1,528
Average Total Lead Piping Engineer, Dep't Prorate & Admin. = 3,438

Average % Piping Design Hours vs. Total Piping Hours = 77.46%
Average % Piping Material Eng. Hrs vs. Total Piping Hours = 5.48%
Average % Piping Material Control. Hrs vs. Total Piping Hours = 2.37%
Average % Piping Stress Eng. Hrs vs. Total Piping Hours = 4.25%
Average % LPE, Dep't/Admin. Hrs vs. Total Piping Hours = 10.17%

Average Total Hours Per Line Number = 86.47
Average Total Hours per Isometric = 24.11

You need to think about these kinds of activities, and time requirements for your company and project. Then you would now need to use your own labor rates to get a project price for piping engineering and design.

Agree with 14 - 16 but this assumes maybe 50 ft of pipe per sheet, iso's made from existing plan drawings, and fully detailed with hangers, specialties, welding, etc. My experience is primarily with larger pipe, not small-bore HVAC distribution.

Clarification.

Here, may not be in all places, a spool drawing is a plan/elevation of a single piece of fabricated pipe, flange to flange, or flange to weld, as required to fabricate a single piece of pipe as it will move through a pipe fabrication shop. It will show pipe, fittings and parts welded to pipe and not include anything bolted or fastened to, or used to support pipe unless it is welded to the pope spool. There may be 2-3 or 4-6 or more spools per iso.

is that what you wanted to know about?

Dear All,

What was I want to know? I wanted to know like Vesselfab had explaned. Spool drawing is the drawing for pipe fabrication.

I juss would like to know how to calculate the price of spool drawing that I have draw.

kono07,
I did not catch on that you were asking about pipe fabrication shop "Spool" sheets. My mistake, I'm sorry.

You do not say what country you are in or tell us what monetary system you are using, so it is a little hard for us to give you a cost.

However, we can suggest some time factors/hours for the development and handling and then you can add your own labor rates.

Time /hours for a Pipe Fabrication Shop "Spool" should include the following:
Draw (manual or CAD) = 2 hrs (avg.)
Check and correct = 1.5 hrs (avg.)
Material take-off = 0.5 hrs (avg.)
List and track = 0.5 hrs (avg.)
Supervision = 0.2 hrs (avg.)
Total = 4.7 hrs (avg.)

When considering your labor rate I suggest you consider the following.
Novice drafters will have a lower labor rate but will take more time and make more mistakes.
More experienced drafters will take less time and make fewer mistakes but will cost more.

You should try to have a balanced mix when building a staff to do this type of work. This will help to raise the quality while keeping the rates down. It will also provide a mentoring relationship between the older and younger members.

You should also recognize that there tends to be a high rate of turn-over among the staff doing this type of work.
The reason for this is simply that it is very boring work.

Dear pennpiper,

Thank you for your clarify explanation. I have understood more about spool drawing calculation price and thanks so much with your suggestion about the drafter...... :O)

What about Piping Stress Analysis calculation price per piping Stress Iso?

L S THILL

Isthill,
Your question sounds very simple but the answer requires more detailed information.
The Hour %'s listed above in my "27 Sep. 07 13:00" post could be used for a normal refinery unit addition or revamp. These percents could also be considered as a base line. Beyond that I would need to consider and adjust for the following:
The type of plant.
- - Water Treatment Plant - 50% to 70% of base line
- - Biotech/Pharmaceutical plant - 65% to 80% of base
- - Refinery - Base line as shown on the chart above
- - Power Plant [non-nuclear] - 110% to 125%
- - Nuclear Power Plant - 150% to 200% of base
The climate and location of installation.
- - Arctic - increase base
- - Zone 4 seismic - increase base
The applicable Design Code.
- - ASME B31.3 - Use base
- - Other - adjust base as required
The engineering company's stress analysis philosophy.
- - Adjust as required
The Client's stress analysis philosophy.
- - Adjust as required

You should also look at the historical data from past projects. You and others should always collect "end of the project" data to use in future planning.
