If anybody has any tips on estimating the time it takes to do an NX model and drawing please pass them onto me.
This is something that I am terrible at and this is part of the job description of a position that I am looking into.
I am looking for just general tips, obviosly nothing can be too specififc here. I always way under-estimate.

I'd say any CAD package should require about 5 minutes per feature and drawings about 5 minutes per dimension with whatever time it takes to do the research to know what features or dimensions are required. If it's existing drawings to models and CAD drawing, then the 5/5 should be about right, but there might be 10-20 minutes just to start if there are a lot of model settings or standard notes to deal with.

So, a block with 4 holes - 10 minutes (one block and all 4 holes can be done at the same time.) If there are 3 dimensions for the block, 1 for the hole size, 4 more for the hole locations, then 40 minutes to handle that and another 10-20 just for getting the rest of the drawing in shape. So, figure 60-70 minutes.

What fits in that? Sometimes people want special tolerances or make them basic and add datum feature symbols and feature control frames. Or there's a phone call.

Depending on how much re-use you find that might mean copying an existing drawing and model to a new name and a couple of tweaks. Again 10-20 minutes to start and 5 minutes for each change.

Assuming nominal competence, same as it takes for any other CAD package. Nothing magical about NX.

If one is skilled, modeling time is governed partly by number of features, and partly by the design process. I can make models quickly. Solving problems, tweaking fit, etc. takes time.

I don't think of drawings in terms of number of dimensions. It's number of features that need to be expressed and defined that govern time. Some features take more thought, especially if tolerances or GD&T are tricky.

Also, start at 10 minutes just to get format and drawing information situated.

Worry less about time spent creating drawings and more about time spent deciphering bad drawings.

Way back in time I was working as a designer/draftsman on the wooden drawing board. ( before that company implemented CAD. 80-ies.)
then the rule of thumb was that, if you knew the design and what to draw, an A4 drawing ( ~Letter size in the US) should roughly take 4 hours.
The A sizes is defined such that an A3= 2xA4, an A2=2xA3=4xA4 and this should also correspond to the time necessary : Creating an A2 Drawing = 4x4h = 16 Hours

Tomas

I have been away from my computer for the last week, so thank you very much for the responses, they were nice to see and are very helpful.
