ETAP 2

Hello guys,
Just curious I am doing ME in India in power systems so no much professional experience.So, I learnt about this software named ETAP and they are conducting five day training here.So, my question is this training or particularly software worth and valued in industrial sector?Or I should do with other softwares like Power world simulator or others better if any?Your feedback would be much appreciated...Cheers

Based on my experience, I can say that ETAP seminars are great and worth its price if you can digest its content properly.

However, for you to be able to fully appreciate the training, I suggest that you get a free demo download and try to get the feel of using the software.

Generally, ETAP is a user-friendly software and allows you to perform necessary simulations in industrial applications.

Thanks luffy....they have named the course as Power systems I..so may be I will take as it's a lot cheaper than in developed nations..Can you suggest me if there are other better softwares than it in field of maybe transmission and protection design?

You can try SKM and EasyPower. But stay away from Cyme...

You will get diverse opinions on this question. The answer may be based as much on what will be available to you than on the technical merits of the software. Personal opinions often are based on which program the user learned first and uses the most.

These are expensive programs - most companies will only use one or two.

We use EasyPower and SKM.

If you have some say in what program will be purchased, I'd strongly recommend that you obtain trial versions and get some experience building actual one-line diagrams with each package.

I think Power Systems 1 is ETAP 115.

Well, I may be bias here since I'm an ETAP user. Nonetheless, I strongly suggest that you try to get free demo versions of at least two or three software to evaluate what program can sufficiently cater your specific needs. Trial versions are free, so maximize it.

For protection and coordination, ASPEN and CAPE are usually mentioned. However, these are expensive programs and thorough evaluation is needed.

Building a one line diagram is unpleasant. Every two-handed equipment you add must be between two buses. Because of that, you find yourself with many buses that must have a unique name and that are useless. Plus you have to manually remove their labels one the one-line diagram.

The tcc module is ok, but I find that all the different modules don't work well together.

The Arc Flash label generator doesn't work well with Excel.

Support is ok, but the Users Forum is abandonned and the Help button in the software gives useless informations. So you better call them.

Presently, I'm stuck with this software cause I have the French version and two customers that want their reports in French...

Any softwares you can suggest in panel wiring drawings beside autocad and panel wiring calculations and estimates?

Download the demo and try watch the webinars available on ETAP website. Since you dont have any experience with ETAP before, so I believe attending a seminar will be like wasting your money.

Try to get data for any old project, model the single line and simulate it. You will come accross some errors in your working. Study your weaknesses and get the basic knowledge of ETAP. Then you can go for ETAP seminar and you will have some solid questions in your mind to be asked from the instructor.

Thanks ErmBra...Sorry your name sounds little cheeky ha ha. About ETAP, one more question? I checked the internet..other softwares like cyme, pscad are separately using Emtp RV for transient studies. How about ETAP, how good and accurate are their transient study results?

I didn't know CYME has an EMTP module.

As for ETAP, its transient study is limited only to electromechanical transients such as transient stability. Results are comparable to the more expensive PSS/E.

For electromagnetic transients analysis, EMTP-RV and PSCAD are recommended. If you're looking for a free software, you can try the alternative transients program (ATP) -

I use both ETAP and PowerWorld and am proficient in both. One is for industrial and the other for the HV grid. Issues and needs are different.

ETAP is the one that has the modules needed for industrial work. Short circuit, load flow, protection coordination, arc flash, motor starting, harmonics, and others. Other well known and also good programs for industrial work are the ones from SKM, EasyPower, and others.
