I'm an engineer in the States that is most familiar with the 2nd order analysis procedures outlined in AISC. I'm now working on a project in Europe, however, so I will be designing a building per EN 1993-1-1:2005. In the Eurocode, I'm having some difficulty finding concise information on the 2nd order procedures available. So, a few questions of mine are as follows:

Column Design (Sway Condition) -
It looks like the provisions of section 5.3.2 Imperfections for global analysis of frames is similar to the Direct Analysis Method. Is this method more preferable in a finite element analysis compared to section 6.3.3 Uniform members in bending and axial compression?

I also cannot find a section in this version of the Eurocode that clearly defines unbraced length / k-values. NCCI document SN002a-EN-EU says to use the distance between restraints of the compression flange with a k = 1.0, but DD ENV 1993-1-1: 1992 Annex E discusses the procedure to calculate k which is similar to the alignment charts in AISC. What am I missing here, am I crossing code equations?

Any other helpful hints/tips/considerations are appreciated.

Feeling slightly overwhelmed,

I'm a bit overwhelmed with work right now but, besides the Steel Designer's Manual and Trahair's book, here's a list of some sites that have really good information on the design of steel structures to EC3:

Hope it helps.

Hi

Simplify the design using Section 5.3.2 and calculate k value
