Dear all

I need to evaluate, both quantitative and qualitative, the elements and molecular constituiton of a coating/ paint applied by spray. This coating is used in situations of low friction needs.
I'm going to do some qualititive analysis in XRD and SEM/ EDX. XRD should give me the results very easily but they are only qualitative. SEM/ EDX for elements with atomic number lower than 12 is not very correct and also i think i have present in this coating several organic compounds, such as Graphite, Teflon and others, that EDX cannot establish the difference between molecules (Carbon is present in all the compounds i think exist in the coating).
My question is:
What should be a accurate and available way of determening what's present in this coating?

Best regards

Paulo Vilaça

Fourier Transform InfraRed spectrometry (FTIR) can evaluate most organic compounds.

Inductively Coupled Plasma spectrometry (ICP) can evaluate the chemical composition of almost anything, although it can't differentiate molecules.

Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) can provide results for molecules.

Ths a lot CoryPad.

In my college years i've worked sometimes with FTIR (i've forfot how!!!) but it gives me a qualitative analysis of what´s present in a determined sample. For quantitative analysis is ICP (which i ddin't knew before) suitable? what technique you think would be helpfull for a quantitative analysis?

Thank you in advance and best regards

Yes, ICP provides quanitative information, as does GC/MS.
