Dear Sirs,

I am looking for information about evaluation of foundation condition under a building for determination of volume of improvement work for increasing the bearing capacity (foundation improvement for prevent the failure or deformation).
As i understand it can be achieve by means of Cone Penetration Test methods (CPTU, SCPTU & etc) and by some distance sensing.

Could you be so kind to help me to find the peaple who may concerning following question.

Why is it necessary to increase the bearing capacity under the building now? Will the building be modified to add more weight? Is there current visible distress? Has surrounding overburden been reduced?

Yes, there are several ways to evaluate. The most common is to use the same methods you would use for design geotechnical investigation, assuming access is available at the perimeter of the building and perhaps even placing a boring inside the building.

I recently did a project where 4 stories were being added to a hospital building, thus increasing the loads on the existing footings by 50%-100%. Traditional underpinning was specified, but physically impossible due to access and groundwater. We installed jet grout columns, through the existing footings, to a depth of -40' in order to increase the capacity. Worked very well.

A few times in the past we have performed CPT tests on existing buildings in order to assess unusual amounts of settlement which are happening. On other occasions CPT testing of this nature has been conducted in order to examine the possibility of adding more floors to an existing structure.

The process: A small hole is cored in the floor slab and a mini cone pushing unit is bolted to the slab. Hydraulic power is supplied via a power pack or hydraulic lines connected to the drill rig outside.

The mini cone pushing units are small enough to be wheeled into a office or underground parkade. Some companies also have mini drills and soil samplers which can be deployed within very tight spaces.

Check with Fugro as they have quite a variety of CPT testing tools and minature soil sampling equipment.
