Hello,

I have been offered a new position in USA, but now HR is struggling with my German Educational BG. All I need is the equivalent of a High School Diploma. In Germany I left the 11th grade of a Gymnasium, I achieved the Z-pruefung for Psychology, and I have completed the Industriekauffrau Ausbildung. Is any of this equivalent to a HS Diploma?

Thank you for your help!

Did you specialize in basketball or volleyball at the gymnasium?

I'll assume that remark was an attempted joke:

Given that you appear to have skipped the last two years of Gymnasium, you may simply have to take a high school equivalency exam. Your English appears to be more than passable, and your Industriekauffrau Ausbildung ought to be sufficient to pass the math related portions of the exam.

You might be able to argue that the Industriekauffrau Ausbildung is essentially a vocational training, and Industriekauffrau essentially qualifies you to be at least a cashier at McDonald's which about what high school equivalency is supposed to qualify you for.

Tell HR to call me, and I will explain to them that a German HS diploma is equivalent to two years of US college.

It may take a while, as HR people are kind of slow and first need to learn what Germany is, and then what two is. Most have been to college, but haven't learned anything.

That might be the case if the OP actually finished Gymnasium. She missed the last two years, from what I can tell.

Perhaps the German consulate could be of help?

RKWoods, I cannot help you with your question but please accept my very poor attempt at German: Wilkommen zu den Vereinigten Staaten. (I probably got the articles wrong...)

And if you do the GED, do it soon, some states are changing their tests to be harder.

Or, rather than asking us you could ask an accredited organization from who specialize in assessing equivalency.

For Government jobs they only accept an equivalency review from a member of NACES as I recall.
