Hi,
I'm evaluating different valve types for isolation of hydrogen recycle compressor. I would like to hear your experience, recommended resources, etc. to what type of valve could be used for this service. Currently, we have orbit ball valves installed in the system, but due to its long lead times, we would like to know if there are other better/or equivalent alternatives that we should consider.
size: 10"
Class: 1500#
Location: inlet and outlet of compressor
Thanks all in advance.

The orbit valve is expensive and a long lead item comparing to the gate or ball valve. For the H2 compressor system, however, the good practice is to use orbit valve to improve the safety and provide tight shut-off isolation. You may need approval for the operation risk by substituting the orbit with the other type of valve.

Thanks mk3223. That's what I kind of suspected, I just wonder where can I found an independent literature to back those points up? Because if I talked manufactures, their valves is always the best. Thanks.

Unless the manufacturer can show you actual cases where their product has proven successful use in this application, then you are simply taking an expensive, and usually career limiting risk. Be sure to check a few of the references cited by the manufacturer. There are cases where metal seated ball valves other than Orbit have been used in this application.

Thanks bcd. Could you please give some insight to why we shouldn't use Gate, or others for this service? I am in agreement with you but not quite sure the reason(s) since there are gate valve that could provide tight shut-off. Thank you.

You will have packing leak problems with gate valves in this application. Linear versus rotary stem movement within the packing.
