Hi all,
I am looking for exact and/or empirical formulas related to plates. ribbed plates actually. I am in search of formulas relating force or stress and displacement or strain. thanks

Ribbed plates can be calculated as homogeneous plates by taking an average inertia.
The treatment of homogeneous plates can be found on many textbooks, you should be clearer on your requirements.

Well I was hoping for the actual equations for these. i.e. sigma= F(lenght, thickness, rib length etc., strain)

it's not that simple ... "ribbed" means integrally stiifened (a plate with machined risers), a plate with discretely attched stiffeners, a corrogated panel, ...

the behaviour of the panel depends on the loading, compression and shear being the most critical.

and the application ...

and, IMHO, we shouldn't be spoon-feeding posters ... you need a body of knowledge to apply the answers/suggestions we provide. read some of the material suggested and if you have specific questions, ask away ... someone might even be able to help !

I am sorry for not being very clear. What I am looking for are books that contain these formulas. Stiffened plates - integrally as well as with welded or attached stiffeners. I need the name of the books because my boss was asking me for these. I could probably derived the solutions using homogenization or even by residuals if the plates are simple (maybe). thanks a lot though

i would recommend Bruhn "Analysis of Flight Vehicle Structures" and Michael Niu ... 'cause they're one's i've used.

Theory of Plates and Shells, by Timoshenko (or as Greg know 'im, Tim O'Shenko).

You are right. Sometimes the posters' most urgent need is the "key" to the issues they are asking, not "exact" solutions, which could be misleading, or help to kill the person's ingenuity.

well thanks everybody, sorry, I should not have said exact but rather analytical solutions. I am currently checking papers by Andrianov-

Hope you got what you need. No need to apology, just to take on this opportunity to remind all of us what this forum represents.

Add'l though on above sentimental writing:

It is not at all an effort to discourage those courious minds, especiall the young ones, to seek "exact", "unique" solutions in this arena. However, to me, this is a place to discuss events, exchange ideas, gather informations, clarify uncertainties. Be ready you have the background necessary to filter all informations, advices, ideals received, and turn the conclusion into you practice only after thoughts. Otherwise, one may be inadvertently mislead in a harms way.

That's the simple precaution (common knowledge) for using Weird, Wary). Isn't it?
