I don't see this as a structural issue, however, I was asked to inquire - Is there a code or personal standard used for distances and spacings of expansion or control joints in foundation walls, retaining / basement walls, where the inside face of the concrete wall is exposed to an occupied, interior space?

Thank you ...

Rules of thumb are used that have their origin in empirical masonry design. The limits today are best generated by the ability of the contractor to complete a monolithic reinforced concrete placement with proper consolidation and the amount of forms owned. Any pour with dimensions greater than 75 feet should be studied for use of expansion and control joints. Aesthetics suggest a 2:1 ratio of dimensions, (twice ceiling height as space between joints assuming an even division of the wall). Crack control should be included in design of long dimensions between joints.
