Hi,
Which criteria to check when analysing an expansion joint using caesar II, displacement, Stresses and what else ?
Ad regarding displacement do i have to make sure that displacement in occasional load cases are within allowable values or i only need to cheek them in oparting and expansion load cases ?

Thank you in advance

Hi!,
Yes you have to check your stresses and displacements as main priority. And one more thing that you need to be careful. You must consider THRUST LOADING being generated inside expansion joint while system pressure affects effective diameter of expansion joint.

You need to see manufacturer catalog which will probably have Axial,Transverse, Angular stiffness values. It must also have Effective ID(Internal Diameter)value on that. Effective ID will be used in pressure thrust calculation. It is very important because due to big Thrust Force, the expansion joint can open up and damage itself and other piping items when it is not properly supported.

Please also check your displacements on the side nodes of the expansion joint and make sure if it is within the allowable Expanding/Compressing limit compared to Max/Min operating lengths shown in manufacturer's catalog.
